The Puppy Up! 2011 Walk begins -- Belton, Texas

by Tish Beauchamp Cotham

Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 5:30 AM my alarm makes my headache, which was pounding, even worse. My only thought was “let me sleep a little bit longer” and “if I get up then please let the coffee be good.” These thoughts came and went fast because those are not the thoughts of someone who Puppys Up!

I had loaded my truck the night before so I only had to shower, grab a few last minute items, then head to the park. I arrived to a quiet park, free of cars, people and dogs. Within a few hours I was off and running! It was a day of remembrance, honoring and helping. It was a day like no other.

I watched as the four legged, three legged and two legged made their way into the park towards registration and vendors.  Some came from as close as ten minutes away to as far as three hours away.  The estimated 100 people with their companions came to walk two miles because of their own personal desire to make a difference in this fight against cancer.

I walk for Brutus.

I had no idea what I had done until I looked into their eyes, listened to their stories and shared tears with them.  I had no idea what it truly meant until I stood before the crowd and began my speech.  It was a simple speech in the beginning.  I had thanked them all for coming, and introduced our sponsors and acknowledged our vendors.  I introduced our human breast cancer survivor of four years.  She’s a tough woman and refuses to let cancer keep her down.  I moved onto our many canine survivors that were there in the crowd.  Mast cell tumors, lymphoma, osteosarcoma were just a few.  Then there were those individuals who, days before the Walk, had their shirts made in remembrance of the canines they had loved and lost.

I finished my speech and moved onto the dedication of the first Puppy Up! Walk in Belton, Texas which was organized each day for eight months for the love of Murphy Robinson.  I had written so much about what I felt and what I wanted to say.  I had told Luke that I was nervous about my speech and he simply said to speak from the heart and if I got stuck then to look at my bracelet and share what Murphy meant to me.  With tears I did just that.

Following the dedication, the Puppy Up! song was played and my heart was racing with excitement and a sense of sadness.  This was it — the moment had arrived for our two mile walk.  I saw so much in each person.  I saw tails wagging, smiles and tears.  I saw history being made.

I will never be able to truly thank those that made today possible. There are no words that even come close. I know and realize the best thanks I could give is to never stop and most importantly, never forget.

Central Texas Puppy Up! Walk 2011 Update!

Check out all the great things happening with the Central Texas Puppy Up! Walk …

(by Tisha Beauchamp Cotham ) When I heard the phrase ‘Puppy Up!’ my first thought was how cute it was. Time went on and I was welcomed into the 2 Million Dogs family and then the lessons of ‘Puppy Up!’ were clear. I was learning that bringing awareness to canine and human cancers were so important and there was nothing cute about the diagnosis that many had been given.

I decided back in May to host a Puppy Up! Walk. I couldn’t do this unless I truly believed in what 2 Million Dogs stood for. I spent time visiting with the members, read through some material, asked questions and took a leap towards bringing awareness.  This non-profit organization along with their mission spoke to me and my heart.

It is now less than two months until the very first 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! Walk in Central Texas. Where in the world did the time go? Well, the time has been spent doing many things. Being a Puppy Up Program Supervisor – PUPS – I have brought people in to volunteer and assist in gathering sponsors and vendors. We have collectively come up with some fun activities.  Though this is just a little bit of what we have planned, here is a sneak peek.

The City of Belton Parks & Recreation have sponsored three parks. They are also sponsoring a ‘Dachshund Dash’ and a ‘Happy Puppy Fun Run.’ The Dachshund Dash will take place starting at 2:30 PM and prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners of $100.00/$50.00. The Happy Puppy Fun Run will begin at 4:00 PM and this is just for fun so you don’t want to miss it.  For more information on these two festivities please contact: 254-933-5860  or 254-933-5861 or visit their website.

Belton Small Animal Clinic graciously agreed to be a sponsor and they are going to be offering microchips at a discounted price of $25.00 which includes the chip and registration filing fee. All the proceeds from this will be donated to 2 Million Dogs. They have listed our Walk and also some of the story that started it all on their website.

Dr. Edwards with the Bell County Veterinary Hospital (1005 East 6th Avenue Belton, TX 76513) has offered to vaccinate any canine that needs his or her shots prior to the Walk with a 10% discount!  Please stop by anytime between now and Saturday, November 5th.  Make sure you tell them that you would like to receive the 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! discount. Their number is 254-939-5762.

Amy Bickel, who is a photographer, will be with us to capture the event as it unfolds from beginning to end.

Leslie & Gabby with ‘LawDog Bullies’ and ‘Star of Texas Kennel’ have jumped on board and are hosting a ‘2 Million Dogs showdown’ This is where they will help promote the Belton Walk, raise money and allow altered dogs to show in their event. The ‘showdown’ will take place on Saturday, November 5th at Murphy Park Pavilion in Taylor Texas.  For additional information please visit: http://www.stkc.net/index.html

We have advertisements on two separate radio stations, KLove and AIR1.

We will also have a booth at the Austin Pet Expo on Saturday, October 8th and welcome all those near and far to join us in bringing awareness and reminding people that Texas knows how to Puppy Up!

We will continue to promote our Walk up until the minute it begins. And we will continue to bring awareness well after this walk concludes. For more information or if you would like to donate, volunteer, sponsor or even be a vendor then please visit our website.
