Featured Pup — Shamus Lightbody

(by Joan Lightbody) My name is Shamus. I was adopted when I was 1 day old. My mother was abandon with 9 pups and animal control asked Joany and Ronnie to foster us for a little while. They kept me and my brother Polar Bear. Polar went to the bridge 6 years ago. He had seizures. He started having seizures when he was 2. He just went to sleep while at home one afternoon. I miss him.

I am blind and diabetic. I am 14 years old and a survivor. I had an 8 pound 12 ounce tumor removed from my chest. I am very lucky to still be here. They were afraid to operate because of the location of the tumor — it was close to the jugular. I was getting very uncomfortable and it was bothering me so they said I had a 50/50 chance. We decided to go ahead with surgery. Guess what. I Won.

I love the snow I still play with my new friends Captain, Cherry (border collies) and the new edition Daisy (Saint Bernard). I am the boss. I used to play fetch but now it is hard on me.

I was at the Puppy Up! Walk in Plymouth in 2011. I wasn’t able to walk the whole way but I stayed all day and greeted pups. What a great day.

I am sad today to share that Shamus passed away October 1, 2012. “Shamus went peacefully to the bridge today. Thank you to everyone. Thanks to his friends that stopped by to say see you later. Thanks to Stephanie at the clinic, and a special thanks to Dr. Fall who made his passing easy and helped us keep Shamus going these past few years. I miss you Shamie my pretty boy.
