Puppy Up! Denver — Rocky Mountain Cluster of Dog Shows

Posted by Erich Trapp on February 12, 2011

This just in from our long-time friend and supporter, Hope Lisle:

I will be organizing the first PUPPY UP! DENVER walk on November 6, 2011 but our first project is just one week away. I need volunteers (human and canine) to volunteer at the 2 Million Dogs Table at The Rocky Mountain Cluster of Dog Shows in Denver on Saturday, February 19 and Sunday,  February 20. Please contact me at hopelisle@yahoo.com and title your e-mail “Denver Dog Show” if you can help. The hours are from 9 AM to 3 PM and will be divided into 2 or 3 hour shifts.

This is a huge dog show (over 2300 dogs are entered) and this year is extra special because it is their 25th anniversary. There are always several dogs at this show who have just returned from the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. You can come out and make a difference while having a good time with your best friend. You can also watch show dogs, agility dogs, and obedience dogs. In addition, you can buy some cool stuff because this show always has terrific vendors. Unfortunately, because 2 Million Dogs is classified as a non-profit, we are not allowed to sell merchandise at this show. But we will be giving out lots of information. Also, the only dogs allowed at the show are the ones that are entered in the show or entered as a vendor. If you are just coming to watch the show, please leave your dog at home.

Daisy (CH. Bandit's Darling Daisy AX, AXJ NA) flying through the air!

On a personal note, this weekend is the 2 year anniversary of the loss of my amazing little Boston Terrier, Daisy, to a brain tumor. I lost Daisy on Valentine’s Day 2009, which was on a Saturday that year and also the weekend of the big Denver dog show. Daisy competed in conformation and in agility at this dog show numerous times.

What is Comparative Oncology?

Posted by Erich Trapp on February 4, 2011

Today is World Cancer Day. Much of the focus is on human cancers and what can be done to prevent and cure them. But comparative oncology goes beyond human cancer studies to incorporate canine patients as well.

Humans and dogs have been partners over the centuries, and now we’re again helping one-another, through the field of comparative oncology, to understand cancer, teaming up with our best friends to develop studies and treatments that “span the species.” There is an excellent overview of comparative oncology and how doctors and veterinarians are collaborating in understanding the parallels, as well as the differences, in canine and human cancers, presented by The Land of Pure Gold. Click here to visit their page and learn about:

• environmental risks of cancer
• the predisposition of some breeds for certain types of cancers
• therapeutic strategies for a variety of cancers
• cancer and gene imaging systems
• clinical trials
• cancer clues in dogs
• cancer resistance

as well as a host of other invaluable resources.

And please visit our web page for a list of the early warning signs of canine cancer.

World Cancer Day

Posted by Erich Trapp on February 3, 2011

Honestly, I’d really wish they’d have called it World Cancer Awareness Day. Somehow World Cancer Day just doesn’t sound very positive.

Anyway, from the UICC: On the 4th of February, 2011, the Union for International Cancer Control and its partner organizations will run campaigns all over the world to raise awareness for a disease that causes millions of deaths every year [both human and animal], many of which could have been prevented.

More than ever before there is a need for a concerted and coordinated fight against cancer, and the UICC believes that World Cancer Day can play its part by providing an even bigger platform for cancer messages.

Sharing from BoneCancerDogs, IncPlease take 5 minutes Friday, February 4th to share your cancer knowledge with someone you know. With 1 in 4 dogs getting tumors in their lifetime, the more info shared the better. Let the voices of those who have been affected by cancer be heard.
